Solar Hot Water systems (Solar Thermal) The process is relatively simple, the sun's energy is harnessed through a closed loop system which circulates from your mechanical room to a Solar collector on your roof. The heat is transferred through a heat exchanger which is mounted on the side of a solar storage tank (normal hot water tank). Cold water enters the heat exchanger and then provides hot water to your main domestic tank. A typical household hot water consumption alone represents about 25% of its energy requirements. The entire system only require 23 watts to operate, so there are no substantial electrical needs. In fact a small PV module can easily offset the amount of electricity. In October of 2009, Ontario introduced FIT, an encouraging move by the Ontario government which offers some of the best buy back rates in North America (80 cents per kwh). It is only a matter of time until BC and the rest of Canada adopt a similar set of Feed in Tariffs.
